25 Years of Strides for the Cure

Strides for the Cure began in 2001 as the vision of Donna and Jude Baker. The event was created to raise funds for a comprehensive cancer education program for students in third through fifth grade.

‍

Using an educational curriculum from St. Jude's Children’s Hospital, the program teaches children about cancer while also incorporating physical activity and helping young people understand how movement and healthy lifestyle choices can play a role in reducing the risk of cancer and other non-communicable diseases.

‍

“As a cancer survivor for over 27 years, it has always been my passion and the passion of my husband, Jude, to give back to our community,” said Donna Baker, founder of Strides for the Cure and The Baker Foundation. “We truly believe that taking steps to reduce your risk of cancer through positive lifestyle choices is paramount, and we created this program to support our most impressionable population, our youth. Health education is key to helping reduce cancer rates on Guam and improve the overall health of our island.”

Supporting Kids for the Cure

100% of proceeds from Strides for the Cure will support Guam Cancer Care’s Kids for the Cure Cancer Education Program.

Guam Cancer Care recently relaunched the program at Ordot Chalan Pago Elementary School and hopes, with the support of the Guam community, to eventually bring Kids for the Cure to all 26 Guam Department of Education public schools on the island.

Over the past 14 years, Guam Cancer Care has helped approximately 5,000 cancer patients on Guam access much-needed cancer care. The organization is now working to strengthen its focus on prevention alongside its continued support for people currently affected by cancer.

“We are extremely humbled to team up with Jude and Donna from The Baker Foundation to bring the Strides for the Cure event back to Tumon and especially to help raise funds so that we can aggressively and effectively implement the Kids for the Cure Cancer Education Program in more elementary schools on Guam”

said Terry Cuabo, Executive Director of Guam Cancer Care.

“Although providing assistance to those currently impacted by cancer is important, we need to simultaneously increase our focus on cancer prevention with the hopes of reducing cancer rates on Guam.”
